Anatole Krasnyansky (1930-2023) was a Ukrainian-American artist best known for his cityscapes and innovative watercolor techniques. The painting shown is one of his "Venice Canal" serigraphs. Serigraphs, also known as silkscreens, are a type of limited-edition print created by using stencils on stretched fabric to apply ink to paper or canvas. Krasnyansky's serigraphs often depict vibrant architectural scenes, incorporating elements from his background as an architect. The artist's work is characterized by two distinct styles: traditional European cityscapes and surreal, mask-like figures. Krasnyansky, who was born in Kyiv, Ukraine, and emigrated to the United States in 1975, found inspiration in his new home, which led him to develop a more surreal and baroque style. The piece shown here of Venice's canals is clearly an example of his cityscape style. Ukrainian artist Anatole Krasnyansky pioneered new techniques in watercolor by experimenting with texture. His artistic output centered on dualities: old and new, history and imagination, structure and surrealism. Through two distinct approaches to his art, Krasnyansky depicted expressive architecture and surreal figures to remind us to never forget the accomplishments of the world’s cultures and traditions.
