About the Artwork and Artist:
  • Artist: Barry Leighton-Jones (1932-2011), an English painter known for his figurative work and especially for his series featuring the clown Emmett Kelly, which came about after a commission from Kelly's family in 1985. Emmett Kelly's iconic "Weary Willie" character originated not in the circus ring, but on paper, as a down-and-out cartoonist's creation before evolving into one of the most beloved and melancholic clowns in history.
  • Subject: The painting depicts the well-known American circus clown Emmett Kelly Sr., famous for his "Weary Willie" persona, which captured the pathos and sadness of a tramp clown.
  • Significance: "The Tycoon" contrasts the world of performance with the realities of the financial world, symbolized by the clown reading The Wall Street Journal, creating a poignant commentary on economic struggles and the human condition.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Barry Leighton-Jones was born in London in 1932. He is a descendant of Victorian artist Lord Frederic Leighton. He demonstrated early artistic talent and received academic training at Sidcup School of Art and Brighton College. Career
