Karl Wilhelm Friedrich Bauerle (1831–1912), also known as Carl Bauerle, was a prominent German portrait and genre painter, particularly celebrated for his sentimental depictions of children.
Early Life and Education
  • Birth & Emigration: Born on June 5, 1831, in Endersbach, Germany. At age five, his family emigrated to the United States, settling in Ohio as farmers.
  • Initial Training: He began his artistic journey in Cincinnati, learning copper engraving from his uncle.
Formal Studies: He eventually returned to Germany to study at the Stuttgart Art School in 1859 under Professor Rustige, later continuing his education in Munich.
 
Professional Career & Royal Patronage
Bauerle achieved international acclaim as a court painter, specializing in portraits of children and royal families.
  • German Courts: He initially established himself as a portraitist for German royalty, including the Princes of Hohenlohe-Langenburg.
  • British Court: His reputation led to a summons to Great Britain by the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII). He became a favorite of Queen Victoria, painting numerous portraits of the British royal family.
  • Exhibitions: Between 1870 and 1892, he frequently exhibited his works at the Royal Academy in London.
