  • The source of the River Beck is in Spring Park where Shirley and West Wickham meet. For its first mile or so it forms the border between the London boroughs of Croydon and Bromley. Indeed, historically, this was also the border between Surrey and Kent.
ABOUT THE ARTIST

Carl Valente was an American artist born in 1928. He known for his landscapes, mission scenes, English cottage genre paintings and depictions of Amish life. 

He received a scholarship to study at the Cleveland Art Institute. He later moved to Los Angeles, where he worked in the art department of the Herald Examiner. In his leisure time, he pursued painting. He also created commissioned murals for private individuals and corporations, some of which were published in national magazines. Key biographical points:

  • Early Life & Education: At seventeen, he won a national art contest, earning him a scholarship to the Cleveland Art Institute where he studied for several years.
  • Career in Commercial Art: Valente's artistic skills led him to join the Los Angeles Herald Examiner as a staff-artist, illustrator, and designer, where he worked for twenty-two years on various color inserts like California Living and TV Weekly.
  • Transition to Fine Art: He later transitioned from commercial art to focus on his own oil paintings, specializing in landscapes, mission scenes, and English cottage genre art.
  • Artistic Style & Notable Works: In the late 1980s and 1990s, Valente, known as an American Impressionist, created timeless works depicting peaceful American countryside scenes and British villages, including his popular "Homes of the Americana" series featuring various regional American homes.  Artist has been influenced by many artists including Thomas Kinkaid and Terry Redlin. 
  • Current Status: He currently resides in Southern California.
