ABOUT THE ARTIST- Frank McCarthy (1924–2002) was a prominent American artist and illustrator, celebrated as the "Dean of Western Action Painters" for his dynamic and highly accurate depictions of the American Old West. Early Life and EducationBorn on March 30, 1924, in New York City, McCarthy’s passion for art began in childhood, influenced by the classic illustrations of N.C. Wyeth. He began formal studies as a teenager at the Art Students League, where he learned from renowned anatomy teacher George Bridgman and Depression Era painter Reginald Marsh. He later earned a degree in illustration from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn.

McCarthy spent over 20 years as a successful commercial illustrator in New York. His diverse body of work included:
Advertising & Periodicals: Illustrations for major magazines such as Colliers, Argosy, True, Outdoor Life, and Reader’s Digest.
Movie Posters: Design of iconic posters for major film companies, most notably for the James Bond series.
Book Covers: Extensive work for western paperback novel publishers. 
Transition to Fine Art
In 1968, seeking greater creative freedom, McCarthy moved to Sedona, Arizona, to focus exclusively on Western fine art. His career was cemented in 1973 when his first major solo exhibition of 23 canvases in Scottsdale sold out in 20 minutes. In 1975, he was elected to the prestigious Cowboy Artists of America (CAA).
Artistic Style and Legacy- McCarthy's style is defined by intense action, dramatic tension, and meticulous historical accuracy.
Themes: His paintings frequently feature Plains Indians, cavalry, mountain men, and cowboys in high-stakes movement.
Accolades: He received numerous awards, including the Franklin Mint Gold Medal for Excellence in Western Painting (1973), and was inducted into the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame in 1997.
Publications: Several books have been dedicated to his work, including The Western Paintings of Frank McCarthy (1974) and Frank McCarthy’s Old West.
