Biography and Career
  • Education: Heshi Yu was born in Shandong, China, in 1935. He received his primary art education at the Art Department of National Taiwan Normal University. He later traveled to France to further his studies at l'École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
  • Career: In 1968, he moved to New York City and devoted himself to developing his unique artistic style. His work quickly gained recognition in the New York art world; a piece from the 1970s was selected by the Lincoln Center to create a serigraph celebrating the American Bicentenary in 1976.
  • Style and Technique: Yu is known for applying mixed media, including acrylic and ink, often over gold or silver leaves on canvas. He uses techniques intrinsic to Chinese calligraphy in his brushstrokes to emphasize depth and tone, creating vibrant, textured works that blend geometric and figurative images.
  • Exhibitions: His work has been exhibited widely in Taiwan, China, Japan, Europe, and the USA.
