ABOUT THE ARTIST

John Constable (1776–1837) was a major English landscape painter in the Romantic tradition, best known for his revolutionary, naturalistic depictions of the English countryside. He is considered one of the most notable landscape artists of the 19th century, influencing the French Romantic movement and the Barbizon School.
Key Biographical Details
  • Early Life & Education Born in East Bergholt, Suffolk, Constable was the son of a wealthy corn merchant and miller. His father initially intended for him to take over the family business, but Constable pursued his passion for art, entering the Royal Academy schools in London in 1799. He was largely self-taught and developed his unique style slowly.
  • Artistic Philosophy Constable rejected the stylized, idealized landscapes of his contemporaries, opting instead to paint directly from nature in the open air (en plein air), a then-unfashionable practice. He sought to capture the fleeting effects of light, weather, and clouds, which he considered a "very material part of his composition". He famously wrote, "I should paint my own places best; painting with me is but another word for feeling".
  • Major Works & Recognition His most famous works include The Hay Wain (1821), Dedham Vale (1828), and Salisbury Cathedral from the Meadows (1831). While he had limited financial success and late recognition in England—only becoming a full Royal Academician at the age of 52—his work was embraced in France, where The Hay Wain won a gold medal at the Paris Salon in 1824.
  • Personal Life & Later Years Constable married Maria Bicknell in 1816, a union initially opposed by her family due to his struggling artist status. They had seven children. Maria's death from tuberculosis in 1828 left him devastated and heavily influenced the more turbulent, expressive style of his later paintings. He died suddenly in London on March 31, 1837.
