ABOUT THE ARTIST
John Frederick Herring Sr. (1795 – 1865) was a prominent British animal painter, particularly renowned for his depictions of horses and sporting scenes during the Victorian era. Herring was known for his realistic and detailed portrayal of animals, capturing their individuality and emotional expression, contributing to his status as a leading animal painter of the 19th century.
Early Life & Career:
- Born in London in 1795, the son of a London merchant with Dutch heritage.
- Initially worked as a sign painter and coach insignia artist in Doncaster.
- Later became a night coach driver for the "York and London Highflyer" coach, earning him the nickname "the artist coachman".
- He devoted his free time to painting, especially horses, and received some instruction from Abraham Cooper.
- Rise to Prominence:
- His talent was recognized by wealthy patrons, leading him to paint hunters and racehorses for the gentry.
- Known for painting the winners of significant races, including 33 winners of the St. Leger Stakes and 21 winners of the Derby.
- Exhibited extensively at prestigious institutions like the Royal Academy, British Institution, and Society of British Artists, where he became Vice-President in 1842.
- His reputation grew, and he was appointed Animal Painter to HRH the Duchess of Kent in 1845, and later received commissions from Queen Victoria.Later Life and Legacy:
- In 1853, he moved to a more rural setting in Kent, broadening his subject matter to include agricultural scenes, narrative pictures, and hunting scenes, moving beyond solely horse portraits.
- He is considered one of the most eminent animal painters of the mid-19th century, alongside figures like Sir Edwin Landseer.
- His paintings were widely popular and frequently engraved, contributing to his widespread recognition.
- Three of his sons, John Frederick Herring Jr., Charles, and Benjamin, also became notable animal painters, and his two daughters married artists, extending his artistic legacy.
- He died in Kent in 1865.
