Ken Keeley (1934–2020) was a highly regarded American photorealist painter and printmaker, widely known for his detailed, vibrant depictions of New York City streetscapes, newsstands, and iconic landmarks.
Biography
Early Life & Education: Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1934, Keeley studied at the School of Industrial Arts in New York.
Military Career: He started painting at night and on weekends while serving full-time in the Air Force during the Eisenhower administration. After retiring from the service, he decided to pursue art full-time.
Career: Keeley became a prolific artist, with exhibitions dating back to the 1960s. His work is held in numerous public collections, including the Philadelphia Museum of Fine Art, the Malcolm Forbes Public Museum, and the Reading Museum of Fine Art. He passed away in 2020.
Artistic Style & Process
Photorealism: Keeley is primarily associated with the Photorealist or Super-Realist movement. He captured "true-to-life" renditions of urban scenes, such as Times Square, the Carnegie Deli, and Nathan's Famous in Coney Island.
Meticulous Detail: His work is characterized by meticulous attention to detail and vibrant urban energy. He would take hundreds of photographs of a scene to use as a basis for his final pieces, which he created in his home studio without assistants or projectors.
