ABOUT THE ARTIST
LeRoy Neiman (1921–2012) was an American artist celebrated for his vividly colored, dynamic depictions of sports and leisure activities. 
 
Style and Subject Matter: Neiman was best known for his energetic and vibrant portrayals of sporting events, including boxing, golf, football, and basketball, as well as scenes of leisure activities. His work is characterized by its bold colors and dynamic compositions. 
 
Legacy and Philanthropy: In 1986, Neiman and his wife established the LeRoy Neiman Foundation to support arts education. This
foundation led to the creation of centers like the LeRoy Neiman Center for Print Studies at Columbia University and the LeRoy Neiman Center for Study of American Culture and Society at UCLA, as well as scholarships. 
 
Biography of LeRoy Neiman:
  • Early Life and Education: Born LeRoy Leslie Runquist on June 8, 1921, in Saint Paul, Minnesota, Neiman showed an early talent for drawing. After serving in the US Army during WWII, he studied at the St. Paul School of Art and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC).
  • Early Career & Playboy: Neiman taught at SAIC for a decade before his career took a pivotal turn in 1954 when he met Hugh Hefner, who hired him as an illustrator for the newly launched Playboy magazine. He contributed regularly to the magazine, notably creating the iconic "Femlin" character in 1957 and the "Man at His Leisure" series.
  • Signature Style & Sports Art: Neiman developed a distinctive style characterized by vibrant colors, spontaneous brushstrokes, and a sense of movement, perfectly suited for capturing the energy of sporting events. He became widely recognized as the "Father of Contemporary Sport Art," covering numerous Olympic Games, Super Bowls, boxing matches, and other athletic events as the official artist for various networks and organizations.
  • Global Recognition & Legacy: His works were exhibited globally, including at prestigious institutions like the Smithsonian and the Hermitage Museum. Neiman was also a dedicated philanthropist, establishing the LeRoy Neiman Center for Print Studies at Columbia University and funding art education programs.
  • Later Years: Neiman passed away on June 20, 2012, at the age of 91, shortly after publishing his autobiography, "All Told: My Art and Life Among Athletes, Playboys, Bunnies, and Provocateurs".
