Biography of LeRoy Neiman:
  • Early Life and Education: Born LeRoy Leslie Runquist on June 8, 1921, in Saint Paul, Minnesota, Neiman showed an early talent for drawing. After serving in the US Army during WWII, he studied at the St. Paul School of Art and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC).
  • Early Career & Playboy: Neiman taught at SAIC for a decade before his career took a pivotal turn in 1954 when he met Hugh Hefner, who hired him as an illustrator for the newly launched Playboy magazine. He contributed regularly to the magazine, notably creating the iconic "Femlin" character in 1957 and the "Man at His Leisure" series.
  • Signature Style & Sports Art: Neiman developed a distinctive style characterized by vibrant colors, spontaneous brushstrokes, and a sense of movement, perfectly suited for capturing the energy of sporting events. He became widely recognized as the "Father of Contemporary Sport Art," covering numerous Olympic Games, Super Bowls, boxing matches, and other athletic events as the official artist for various networks and organizations.
  • Global Recognition & Legacy: His works were exhibited globally, including at prestigious institutions like the Smithsonian and the Hermitage Museum. Neiman was also a dedicated philanthropist, establishing the LeRoy Neiman Center for Print Studies at Columbia University and funding art education programs.
  • Later Years: Neiman passed away on June 20, 2012, at the age of 91, shortly after publishing his autobiography, "All Told: My Art and Life Among Athletes, Playboys, Bunnies, and Provocateurs".
