Early Life and Education: Nesbitt was born in Towson, Maryland. He graduated from Towson High School in 1951, earned his BFA from the Tyler School of Art and Architecture at Temple University in 1955, and studied in London on a fellowship.
Transition to Realism: He initially worked in abstraction but shifted to realism in the early 1960s with encouragement from artist Robert Indiana.
Signature Subject Matter: Though sometimes associated with Photorealism, Nesbitt developed a unique style. He is best known for his large, vibrant paintings of flowers, particularly irises, roses, and lilies, often depicted close-up.
Diverse Themes: His work also encompassed studio interiors, clothing, urban architecture (especially in SoHo), animals, x-ray figures, and computer components.
Notable Achievements:- Nesbitt was the official artist for the NASA Apollo 9 and Apollo 13 missions.
- The U.S. Postal Service issued four stamps featuring his floral paintings in 1980.
- In 1976, he created a large mural for the U.S. Navy on Treasure Island.
Art World Presence and Legacy: Nesbitt's work was widely exhibited and is held in significant collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, the National Gallery of Art, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. He passed away in New York City in 1993.
