The horse is a Standardbred, an American horse breed known for its ability in harness racing. 
The dynamic depiction emphasizes the motion and power of the horse during a race. 
Mel Hunter initially had a successful career as a science fiction illustrator and a technical illustrator for clients including NASA, National Geographic, and the Hayden Planetarium. In the late 1960s, he shifted his focus to creating original lithographs depicting natural and pastoral scenes, including a popular series of equestrian art.
