Norman Rockwell – Home From Vacation (Tired But Happy) – Hand-Signed Offset Print

This is a full-color offset print of Home From Vacation (Tired But Happy), originally created for the September 13, 1930 cover of The Saturday Evening Post. The print is hand-signed in permanent ink by Norman Rockwell.

In this classic Rockwell image, a weary yet cheerful family returns home from their travels. Rockwell masterfully hides subtle clues throughout the scene, letting us piece together where the family went, what they did, and how much they enjoyed their adventure.

Travel was Rockwell’s great passion aside from art, and this theme runs through many of his works. By 1930, he had visited South America, traveled through Europe multiple times, and had just returned from California—where he met and married his second wife, Mary Barstow. Around this period, Rockwell began exploring Jay Hambidge’s theory of dynamic symmetry, which used diagonal lines to bring balance and motion to his compositions.

In Home From Vacation, Rockwell applies these techniques with brilliance:

  • Strong diagonals animate what could be a static subject.

  • A triangular composition anchors the three central figures.

  • Touches of red guide the eye across the canvas and into the faded lettering of the travel poster, which quietly reinforces the theme of the piece.

This signed print is not only a vibrant example of Rockwell’s storytelling artistry but also a collector’s treasure that beautifully captures the charm, humor, and humanity that define his work.
