The Garden City Golf Club was established in 1899 on Long Island, New York, as a private, men-only club with its course originally designed by Devereux Emmet.Initially a nine-hole layout called Island Golf Links that opened in 1897, it was expanded to 18 holes and incorporated as the Garden City Golf Club in 1899. The club has hosted major events like the 1902 U.S. Open and is known for its classic design, later influenced by golfer and architect Walter J. Travis.  
Architectural influence: 
 
While Emmet designed the original layout, fellow golf architect and member Walter J. Travis was commissioned to design a new 18-hole championship course in 1916 for a separate, but nearby, facility, the Garden City Country Club. However, Emmet's design for the original course was considered Travis's "laboratory" for developing his design ideas.

Championships hosted: 
The club has hosted significant tournaments, including the U.S. Open in 1902 (won by Laurie Auchterlonie) and the U.S. Amateur four times. 
The Travis Bunker: The clubhouse features a room dedicated to Walter Travis, and a specific bunker on the 18th hole is known as the "Travis Bunker".
 
Clubhouse artifacts: 
The clubhouse also serves as a museum for golf history, with artifacts from early golfing legends like Old Tom Morris and Willie Park.
 
Unique traditions: 
The club is one of the few remaining men-only clubs in the United States, a policy that is protected by its private membership.
