The original artwork was created by the Dutch Golden Age master Rembrandt van Rijn (1606–1669) in 1648. His etchings often depicted a range of subjects, including portraits, landscapes, and biblical scenes, and were widely circulated in Europe during his lifetime. He was a master of chiaroscuro, using strong contrasts between light and dark to express emotion and create a sense of psychological depth in his world.
