- The original artwork was created by the Dutch Golden Age master Rembrandt van Rijn (1606–1669) in 1663. This specific impression appears to be a 19th-century printing by French engraver Amand Durand (1831-1905), who renewed and reprinted many of Rembrandt's original copper plates to save the works. The artwork depicts the biblical parable's final scene, where the Samaritan brings the injured traveler to an inn and arranges for his care. It is a notable example of Rembrandt's use of everyday details in a religious scene, such as the inclusion of a dog in the foreground. The original etching is housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
