- This image is a painting of a Vought F4U Corsair, a fighter aircraft that was used primarily by the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and the Korean War. The F4U Corsair was known for its distinctive inverted gull wings, which were designed to provide ground clearance for its large propeller. It was one of the most capable carrier-based fighter-bombers of World War II. Some Japanese pilots considered it the most formidable American fighter of the war. The aircraft's long production run, from 1942 to 1953, was the longest of any U.S. piston-engine fighter.
