ABOUT THE IMAGE

  • This work belongs to Dalí's "Nuclear-Mysticism" period, which combined scientific interests with his surrealist style to depict objects in a state of suspended animation or atomic motion. It depicts various objects—a table, fruits, a glass, a bottle, and cutlery—seemingly levitating or caught in dynamic motion against a background of the Mediterranean Sea.
  • The original painting is part of the permanent collection at The Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida
Core Artistic Concepts
  • Nuclear Mysticism: Dalí’s self-coined movement (1940s–1950s) that merged quantum physicsmathematics, and Catholicism.
  • Disintegration of the Atom: The visual theme where solid objects break down into flying particles, reflecting Dalí’s obsession with atomic energy after WWII.
  • Golden Ratio (Divine Proportion): Beneath the apparent chaos, the composition follows strict mathematical geometry to create "harmony from motion".
  • Corpuscularism: The technique of breaking down images into small, floating spheres or particles, representing the subatomic world.
  • Symbolic Keywords
    • Cauliflower: Chosen for its natural logarithmic spiral. Dalí saw this vegetable as a perfect example of mathematical order in nature, comparing its shape to both the Fibonacci sequence and a nuclear explosion.
    • DNA Spiral: The double-curved balcony railing on the left is Dalí’s tribute to the discovery of the DNA molecule's structure.
    • Fig Leaf: A religious symbol located under the knife handle, alluding to Christianity and Dalí's re-embracing of his Catholic roots.
    • Bread: A constant symbol throughout Dalí’s career, representing everything from basic sustenance to spiritual transformation.
