- The Journey of the Magi is a painting by the Sienese artist Sassetta (Stefano di Giovanni). The work, created around 1433–1435, depicts the biblical story of the three Magi traveling to Bethlehem to worship Christ.
- The painting is a fragment of a larger altarpiece that originally included a scene of the Adoration of the Magi. The fragment shows the Magi and their retinue as a contemporary pageant, with figures in fashionable attire and details like a hunting falcon and a monkey. The fur-lined hat of the magus in pink was possibly inspired by a visit from King Sigismund of Hungary to Siena in 1432.
- Today, the work is part of the collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
- The painting is considered an enchanting narrative work from the 15th century. The artist depicts the religious story as a contemporary procession or "pageant," with figures dressed in the fashions of the time. The journey is set in a barren landscape with skeletal trees, while courtly details such as a hunting falcon and a monkey on a donkey are included. Some descriptions also highlight the artwork's themes of faith, devotion, hope, and perseverance. Other accounts describe the journey as difficult, challenging, and even having a "circus air"
- Hanging hardware included
