About the Artist
John Seerey-Lester (1945–2020) was a world-renowned British artist particularly celebrated for his wildlife and landscape paintings. While he is highly regarded for his depictions of animals and his work featuring historical figures like Theodore Roosevelt, he also produced nostalgic and figurative works that captured quiet, everyday moments.
Born in Manchester, England, Sir John Seerey-Lester (1945–2020) was a world-renowned painter often referred to as the "Godfather of Wildlife Art".
 
Artistic Journey
Early Career: Before turning professional in 1974, he worked as a journalist, editor, and in advertising. His early work focused on nostalgic Victorian and Edwardian street scenes.
The Turning Point: A 1980 trip to East Africa completely shifted his focus to the natural world. He later moved to the United States in 1982, eventually settling in Florida.
Style & Technique: He was a master of narrative composition, often using mist, rain, or moonlight to create a sense of mystery. He preferred to paint from firsthand field experience, traveling to locations like the Arctic, China, and India.
 
Key Achievements
Recognition: His work is in prestigious collections worldwide, including the White House. He was knighted in 2013 by Archduke Andreas of Austria for his contributions to conservation.
Conservation: He raised millions of dollars for wildlife and habitat preservation and received the Simon Combes Award for Conservation in 2014.
