William Gunning King (1859–1940) was a prolific British painter, etcher, and illustrator celebrated for his sensitive depictions of rural English life and his contributions to British Impressionism.

Early Life and Training
Born in South Kensington, London, King received his formal education at the Slade School of Fine Art, the South Kensington Schools, and the Royal Academy Schools. At the Slade, he studied under the prominent Pre-Raphaelite figure Frederic Leighton, whose emphasis on meticulous detail influenced King’s early aesthetic.

Artistic Style
Though trained in academic traditions, King eventually embraced Impressionistic principles. His style is characterized by:
  • Atmospheric Focus: Prioritizing the capture of fleeting light and atmosphere over rigid, precise representation.
  • Technique: Using loose brushstrokes and thin glazes of pigment to build tonal depth and luminosity.
  • Palette: A reliance on muted greens, blues, and browns to evoke a sense of tranquility in his pastoral scenes.
